Smudging
A Modern Smudging Ritual
Smudging is done for many practical and Spiritual reasons.
Most commonly it is used to cleanse and purify a space.
This space could be your car, office, new apartment, purchase
of a previously owned home, even your place of business.
I had a Metaphysical store for many years. I smudged on
a regular basis to rid the shop of any negativity from customers
or myself on a bad mood type day. This remarkably seemed
to help increase sales.
Smudging is always done in a clockwise direction. Clockwise
is the direct used for bring in and the sealing of positive
energy. Start your smudging on an East or North wall. This
honors the Earth or Air direction first. This makes sense
because you are now cleansing your entire space. If you
have multiple floors, work from basement to ceiling. I prefer
wands/sticks to the loose leaf Sage when doing a larger
initial ceremony.
California White Sage
In the semi arid mountains of Southern California along
a 350 mile coastal ecosystem grows a particular type of
sage that is highly revered by American Indians - White
Sage (Salvia Apiana). It is the biggest-leafed, fattest-stemmed
member of the entire sage family and a most highly valued
smudge in all earth and spiritual honoring ceremonies. Some
modern spiritualist refer to it as the "Cream de la
Creme" of sage plants!
For spiritual or medicinal purposes white sage is a
phenomenally powerful herb. The name salvia comes from the
Latin word salveo, meaning 'to heal' (as in salvation).
Apiana refers to the many bees that are attracted to its
small white flowers.
California White Sage does not like the shade but prefers
to grow on well drained slopes where temperatures can reach
as high as 110 degrees. Salvia apiana flourishes best at
higher elevations, usually 1500 ft or higher. While other
plants die in this extreme heat, white sage absorbs the
suns energy to create aromatic oils that keep its leaves
supple and alive. It's foliage color is light blue/green
, the type is Evergreen , and flower color is white and
has a fragrance. Because of the abundant amount of essential
oils produced, white sage burns well as incense or smudge.
American Indians have said that the smoke is useful not
only for the purification of the body, but for purification
of material objects as well. For this reason sage is considered
a sacred plant to many tribes. For sweat lodges, some tribes
boil up wild sage into a tea to splash on the heated stones
when more steam is required, as well as to splash on their
own bodies. Other tribes have placed pieces of sage in between
the firewood in the belief that the plant will help to purify
even the fire itself. The sage wand will smoke profusely
into the air. This is the desired effect. You'll fan the
smoke up towards the ceiling and ask for blessings from
your understanding of a higher power. When you reach a window
or door you will encircle it clockwise completely before
you continuing smudging the rest of your space. When finished
I like to have a small pot with sand for smothering the
sage stick. This completes the job efficiently and will
help save more of your wand for future use.
I've always felt lighten of burdens trapped in the air
and within my self's own attitude. A smudging ritual done
with reverent respect to spirit and ones environment is
a truly cleansing and positive experience that I recommend
to everyone. Smudging a newly required space [office or
home] helps rid misguided/violent energies left from previous
owners. Kind of a cleansing of the very essence of the new
space.
Our sage is hand collected with respect to the plants'
continued survival. We only pick when the plants are mature
so amounts available each year depend on the amount of rain
received.
